ithoughti old hand Registered: 17/07/2001 Posts: 721 Loc: Boston, MA USA	http://www.hamachi.cc/ I tried this nifty little program with my desktop and laptop. It works like a charm for streaming my music at home on my desktop to my laptop for use at my girlfriends house (or anyone elses house for that matter) But something tells me that something bad could happen because it always does. drakino carpal tunnel Registered: 08/06/1999 Posts: 7868	This program was covered on Security Now back on episode 18. Steve seemed to like it a lot, with the only complaint being no OS X client yet. You can either listen to the episode or read a transcript there.

Of course, any of the open standards are a real pain to impliment, especially for only one or two clients. Matthew

However, they tout how easy it is to connect even through a crazy firewall etc on a corporate computer and guess what? I can't connect from work. Oh well. An additional question: So in order to see anything on the connected (windows) computer, you need to enable sharing. Let's say that I only enable one folder on my computer to 'sharing'. How easy would it be for someone that had Hamachi, that I gave my Hamachi Network password to, to break through that 'shared' folder and get into the rest of my system? Basically I'm asking if Windows file sharing is secure so I can give someone access to one folder on my computer to transfer one file and then unshare that folder and I want to make sure that they can't break into my system. Is that possible for someone to do? _________________________ --------- //matt

When more than 2 or so were connected to my little 'hub' the performance was extremely poor. I wanted to use this mainly as a very easy way to share large files between a few people. Obviously the download rates for them was limited by my upload rate. Not very good I'm afraid. I used the Azureus Bittorrent app to share the large files and they sent the .torrent file to people who needed to download it. _________________________ Remind me to change my signature to something more interesting someday

Is that possible for someone to do? ithoughti, all that Hammachi does is create a VPN, so all members of that VPN will see each other as in a regular LAN. Hamachi creates a virtual ethernet card on your PC, with its own IP configuration. So, all that applies to Windows in a LAN, will apply to Windows in a VPN via Hamachi. Shared folders will be seen by others as long as the share permissions (weak) are such to grand access to them . Next, file system permissions (strong) will also define who has access, and what kind of access they have, to the content of the shares. Be very careful with this. Depending on permissions, people in your Hamachi VPN may have access to your local files. Practical example: if you (5.10.10.1) and a friend of yours (5.10.10.2) are in the same VPN via hamachi, you can simply browse your friend's computer and shares by typing "\\5.10.10.2" <ENTER> at the "run" box (start->run). It's just as easy (because it's just a LAN, as a matter of fact). I've been using hamachi in the last couple of months for "lanparties" among friends of different cities, and it usually works well. I see performances drop depending on bandwidth, of course, and some times depending on.... something that I believe is related to Hamachi servers themselves. Fist times I saw a VPN work so easily I was really excited.
