Technique:

Guitar or bass guitar played in a steady, stacatto style through an echo (either tape or analog or digital).

Result:

Rhythmic, somewhat syncopated beat, with the main guitar line producing some of the notes, while other notes in the beat are the echoes bouncing back in between the main notes.

Examples:

Pink Floyd, "Run Like Hell", U2, "Where the Streets Have No Name", and many other examples from the Gilmour and Edge catalogs, and many other guitarists after those guys.

QUESTION:

I know Gilmour far-predates Edge in this respect. I figure Edge got it from him. But where did Gilmour get it from? Is there prior art? I can't think of anything earlier than Gilmour.

I don't know that that's true. I can't really think of anywhere besides "Run Like Hell" that Gilmour used it, and U2 released their first album about the same time (just a little later) as "The Wall".

Gilmour was using it on albums prior to The Wall. It was just the strongest and most obvious example I could think of.

Other back-catalog examples: the last track on Wish You Were Here (1975) and "One of These Days" on Meddle (1971).

Er... I thought "One of These Days" was the result of over-dubbing two bass parts...

If it was, the result is essentially the same as if it had been done with an echo. I know that when they performed it live on tour during the 90's, they did it with an echo.

In any case, I know that the trick predates 1980, I'm just looking for an early example from someone other than Gilmour.

So did anyone get the new Gilmour album ?

You can hear the entire thing here.

I really liked his last two solo records but this one sounds nothing like those.

Edit:
Ok I guess it's just clips now I thought it was the full songs before right after the album came out.
