Interface looks familiar. Touts "Rio DJ"-like features.

I love Google's German-to-English translator:
noticeable by its almost womanlike seeming exterior,

By Crossfading the user can over-dazzle also Songs.

you can buy your mad bought music piece only on iPod and if he goes in 10 years broken and it gives no new more, you are the verarschte customer

Seems genuine though.

Hmmm, peter, I was hoping you might be able to verify if that is indeed the GUI & STMP3600 feature set we've all been waiting for. Sure is the most promising player by far since Chroma and Avalon were deep-sixed.

Extremely familiar looking user interface!

Unfortunately the German site now seems to be down.

It's up for me (or it's reading out of my cache). Here's a screen grab:

So let's see what someone with no brand presence to speak of can do with the technology. For my money they're already a step further than Rio managed - they're actually about to release the product! Well, hopefully

They don't do so bad in welsh either. This report doesn't blame Google, the radio report did, but you would think that a Welsh government body would have better sources.

If only they had done a 30-40 GB version... I can't live with 15GB as successor for Karma...

Believe it or not, Trekstor outsell Apple in Germany - or at least that definitely was the case a few months back... so they do have big brand presence (seen their F1 and DTM sponsorship?), just not anywhere english-speaking!

Then why the heck aren't they releasing a version with a bigger drive. Damn!!!

Check the specs again. The 15GB has lost some weight and is now known as "12 GB".

Because this product is in the "microdrive" category - it uses physically TINY little drives. Presumably they or others will apply the Sigmatel technology to "full size" 1.8" drives if it's successful.

Interesting approach. The way I see it, the chances for success would go up dramatically with 1.8" drives.

The physical size of the Vibez is very small... much smaller than a 1.8" drive.

See here.

Thanks for sharing the pics! As you can tell, I really don't have that great a sense of what size drives fit into what kinds of cases. Was flash ever an option? It may be completely psychological, but I'd personally feel better about spending cash on an 8 GB flash Vibez over a 12 GB HDD Vibez.

Other than physical size, what kinds of benefits does the 1" drive offer compared to the 1.8". I'm asking 'cuz I really really want to like this player. My beloved Karma is pushing 3 years of age and this is the first player I've gotten excited about since, well, the Karma.

I have no insight into why a hard drive was chosen over flash. Once we see the real-world price of the Vibez, it may become more clear.

The Vibez uses a Cornice Storage Element which is what was used in the original Rio Nitrus at 1.5GB. From what I remember, it's nothing like a microdrive, so you couldn't even plug in a Compact Flash card if you wanted something solid state.

Psychological or not, the same applies here. With the iPod Nano at 8GB Flash... I think these guys, unfortunately, don't stand the slightest chance.

And it really saddens me, because as Rob said, if this is not successful, chances of seeing a bigger capacity one will go the way of the dodo...

And to clarify, I wish this wil be a resounding success. I just can't justify spending money for an hard drive based player that is significantly smaller than Karma when, in reality, I need one which is significantly larger...

For folks following this, Trekstor posted a Flash demo and the User Manual.

The UI on this puppy has all the trappings of Karma, minus the Dock & Network menu options. I do see some additional improvements over the Karma besides the obvious color and album art support:

- One touch Shuffle on/off
- Wired remote option
- Infrared remote option for controlling it while docked.

I see no evidence at all of an Ethernet port on the dock. I guess that means bye-bye jEmplode once I eventually buy this.

They're still planning a 15 GB version, but probably not until Q2 '07.

Ooof... That price (for something with a hard disk) isn't going to make these things very popular.

I've got an 8GB one on order; the drive, despite being a Cornice is the new standard design for 1" drives and other vendors make drives with the same physical size & connectors - eg Seagate and Hitachi.

On the downside, these aren't CF drives, they're sub-CF form-factor - so you won't find them as easily as CF drives - but they do exist.

In other words, call a Seagate distributor and request a couple of samples. I'm right on it

Peter - is any software nobbling going on that would make this a problem?
