I was attempting to install a new 40GB Toshiba (MK4026GAX) and am receiving and error: "Couldn't find pump" occurred durring stage 0x20
This stinks... the old drive still works fine. This drive did work fine, it just came out of a laptop. Is that why? Do I need to clear it somehow first?

You need to format it with the drive builder software. Please see this FAQ entry. Hope this helps, Stu

Then check the other entries in the FAQ about your error. I would strongly suspect your IDE header joints or the cable since you say the original hard drive worked fine. Hope this helps, Stu

I am able to re-apply the player software upgrade with my old drive in place. I suppose the next thing is to make sure the drive didn't get damaged when the guy that gave it to me pulled it out. I'm fairly confident in his abilities... but I suppose he could have damaged the drive. It was just running in his laptop. He had NTFS on it, but that shouldn't have an effect right? It should just be clearing the drive and imaging from stratch.

By the way... All the download links to Mark's Special Disk Builder are dead.

Maybe it's just your luck that when you swapped the drive back you restablished the loose connection. Also possible you have a bad drive I guess.

I switched back a couple times and tried different connections on the cable. It has to be something with the drive. I was just hoping someone couple help me diagnose it closer then the upgrade app says.

The last set of links I posted for the updated builder images are still valid. Here's a quick reference:
http://rtr.ca/bigdisk/
Somebody ought to copy those over to RioCar.org and make them available there, just in case I clean up my server someday.
Cheers

Thank you.
The links in the Drive Upgrade Guide are invalid (Still, just checked). Those were the ones I was clicking.
Anyways, once I hooked the drive up to my USB chassis, I had read and write errors like crazy. Tried to reformat the drive with windows and it looked like it finished, but couldn't get any partition off the drive afterwards. Obviously someone damaged it when they pulled it out of the laptop.

I'll get around to fixing those links soon. Of course, the links were good when I put them there. SOMEONE moved them after I made the links. Damn web rot.

Okay, finally fixed the links in the Drive Upgrade Guide to point to the sub-folder that Mark moved the files to. Mark, please don't move them again.

Is it just me or is Mark's server down? Also, did Mark's bigdisk builder get mirrored to riocar.org or anywhere else for that matter (if it did, I can't find it)?
Bah, here I am with a new 80GB drive ready for some quality empeg time and I've fallen at the first hurdle!

I can't reach them at the minute, which is strange, because I was browsing Roger's site earlier today (admittedly at work!)
I'm in the UK connected via BT Broadband, in case that is relevant.

Thanks tanstaafl and Geoff. I tried 2 PC's here and neither would open either Roger's or Mark's sites. I then tried using Firefox and I could at least open Roger's site. I'd normally relish in investigating this kind of conundrum but, for tonight, I'm a mere end-user trying to get something done!

It's working fine for me at the moment...
And I'm just as remote from it as most of you are -- the server's in Seattle, and I'm at work in London right now.
