...particularly my Sony DVP-CX995V DVD changer will not play "stranger than fiction". Ironically this DVD is released by sony pictures. It took me two netflix discs to figure out that its not just a bad copy. Luckily I didn’t have to go though the hassle of trying to return an open DVD.

I found a post on Amazon about others having the same issue with several recent sony dvds (like "casino royale") with many other brands of DVD players.

So far 8 others have reported similar issues with sony movies on Amazon's site.

I called Sony and they assured me that they would "fix" my player if I sent it to Texas for 4-6 weeks. Even if they were willing to pay shipping (which they are not), it would just be easier to rip the movie and watch the copy if I were so inclined to watch any sony movies after this crap.

What a pitifully confused company. And yes, the Casino Royale DVDs rip just fine with the right software.

I never have quite understood this whole encryption battle. They always come up with something that is trivially breakable with the simplest of preexisting tools, yet manage to make it harder to work for the people who would have no idea how to use those tools, and who, therefore, have no intention of misusing the data in the first place.

It's like keeping your car keys inside your locked car. The thieves are more than willing to break the window to get the car, but your wife is locked out.

This echoes my thoughts on any copy protection schemes which inconvenience the legitmate user. They tend to encourage piracy, or at least the cracking of the scheme, for reasons like this. (edit: yeah, what Bitt said.)

I can't believe they offered to fix your player rather than your disc.

You should have told them you owned a different brand of DVD player.

I remember a certain version of The Matrix caused a lot of problems many years back across several cheep (for the time) DVD players because it used a feature but went a bit out of spec with it. I wonder if this is similar, and they are just saying it's due to the copy protection.

Pretty much the only thing Sony Pictures and Sony Electronics share is the "Sony" part of the name. Other then that, they run as two independant companies, doing different things.

I buy a lot of movies, and I rip, burn and watch them all. I never stick a real DVD in my player. Two reasons. 1) I don't want to scratch my original when I leave it face-up on the TV. 2) I don't want to have to watch 5 minutes of unskippable trailers before I watch a movie that I paid for.

Not that it really matters if you've got the originals away in a safe place but doing this with recordable discs is bad. You're exposing the dye layer to more sunlight this way and it'll degrade faster.

That was Sony BMG, a seperate entity half owned by Sony Music and BMG Music, not Sony Pictures or Sony Electronics. Sony Pictures is willingly working with Sony Computer Entertainment (Playstation) to even allow movie sharing in the upcoming Playstation Home, so I'm not sure why they would willingly break their own movies on Sony Electronics devices.

had to use windows media player to watch it. I don't think the problem is with the drive.

good movie, by the way.

When the rootkit scandal broke, I sent Sony an outraged email (I bet that left them quivering in their boots!) and informed them that for the rest of my life Sony would never see another dime of my money.

So far I have held to that, and tried to persuade others to act similarly.

Oh I agree, and I TRY not to do it, but I'm sometimes lazy. At any rate, I'd rather waste a few 35¢ DVD-R's than even 1 original.

Its a work horse. It is locked in a closet with about 300 discs in it. I would say it is the key to my hidden home theater. I was one of those with discs on top of the TV and everywhere. So I designed the new media room so this was not possible.

The only equipment visible is the projector and the remote (Logitech 890). BTW - The sony sucks for keeping track of the movies. The disc manager UI is painfully slow to use and notorious for losing info. SO I loaded all the movie titles and slot number in the remote and it takes care of cueing up the right flix.

I would not suggest the DVD player with out the remote.

I also use a Sony DVD Mega Changer to solve a few problems. It works very very well.

I can't stand Sony's interface either, so I use my PDA and DVDLobby PPC to select the DVD's. I find this quite a good solution but the software hasn't really been developed enough for me to totally get rid of a remote, I also use a Logitech 890 to great effect. People are always impressed with DVDLobby and it only costs $35 for what appears to most people to be a really high end system option

Looks very nice, I don't think I'll bother posting a picture of my set-up after seeing that

Cheers

Cris.

I'm for sure old school as I have the 200 disk Sony changer. At the time I thought, "I will never fill this thing up." Well now that I am nearing 600 movies and about 70 or so in the changer that I have not watched, guess blows that thought out of the water. The only ones I keep in the changer are the ones that we have not watched. I do use a PhilipsPronto with the picture jackets linked to the slot number and a jacket and list view to see what all movies are not in the changer. Also I keep a spreadsheet synced to my Treo so that the wife can look through all the movies we have that we have not watched yet. I agree the Sony disk explorer I is horrible to use.

I started to get the 400disk changer but have decided to wait and start migrating the PC to the entertainment center. I will need to get some large drives before I can migrate my movies over though. I thought that I could then put the 200disk changer in the kids play room but by then they may be up over 200disk as well.

I had the 200 disc changer as well. Lukily the new owner of my condo wanted the whole home theater as is and I got a fresh start. I wrestled with going the PC route, but the DVD changer was just too much cheaper than harddisks (at the time). I am sure at the point I fill the 400 disc changer, this option will be more attractive.

If anyone here owns one of the discs with the problem, you can call 800-860-2878 to get a replacement. Hopefully companies like Netflix will swap out their supplies.

Thanks! Sarcasm - Now I dont have to unload my 300 discs and mail the whole player back to sony for 4-6 weeks. OR as I have recently discovered, I could just dup the disc and play the copy.
