Amazon Buys DPReview.

To me, that's like saying Wal-mart bought Consumer Reports.

Wow.. that would be like having some USA company purchase ManU or something.. totally unthinkable!

I wonder what Amazon gets from this deal?

Why, its not as if Amazon have a particular brand of camera to push.

Still, a surprising purchase none the less.

That's what I was thinking.

I also think it's weird to compare Amazon to WalMart (WalMart is terrible), or DPReview to Consumer Reports (I find CR to be useless).

This is probably a good thing. It certainly signals Amazon's desire to be seen as a destination for camera purchases versus the camera specialty stores like B&H. It could be that Amazon is just looking to own all the "buy now" buttons at the bottom of the reviews and link to DPReview pages from its product pages. Certainly, Phil Askey's prominence only grows with this, and he may have a bigger hand in how Amazon markets and sells cameras (e.g., de-emphasizing megapixels and focusing on other camera features).

I'm sure they have particular brands to not push: namely, the ones they don't carry.

The brands that yield Amazon the best margins could be favored. I doubt very much their margin is uniform across brands.

edit: TinyURL link to camera brands Amazon carries.

I was comparing for different facets of the metaphor. I meant, Amazon and WalMart are both large retailers which have a financial interest in whether certain products do or don't get purchased. Consumer reports and DPReview were known for being impartial reviewers of products, and were not influenced by sales or advertising of the reviewed products.

Phil Askey has been posting a lot to his own discussion forums. Phil mentions that, including those forums, DPReview serves 120M page impressions per month. I'll bet that's a big part of why Amazon is interested in buying them out.

I understand what you meant, I just think that the situation is a little different, and Wal-Mart is just pure evil, so it's hard to compare them to anyone

I don't think it'll be a huge deal, but I do wonder what Amazon's intent is. I also wonder how much they intend to integrate the site. Amazon's UI is pretty bad, and I'm not saying DPReview's is the best, but I'd hate to see it swallowed up Amazon's mess.
