Sorry for the newbie question, but with the company on this site, I figured I would find a good answer here. This has been nagging at me for years...

I frequently see the name UNIX spelled in either leading upper or all upper case. Is the all upper case referring to the original Ken Thompson/Dennis Richie AT&T "UNIX" (i.e., uni / Multics) that is now owned by SCO, with all the variants more correctly/legally called "Unix"? I frequently see both published.

Thanks, Sean

I have seen it both ways, interchanged. My guess is that it depends on whether the writer is using Unix as an acronym (Uniplexed Information and Computing System) or a word.

I have never, ever, heard that before. I suppose it's a convoluted MULTICS-based backronym.

Thanks both of you. The aforementioned site answered all my questions. So, UNIX is a trademark that maybe licensed for a fee, if adhering to The Open Group's specifications. Non-licensed systems are only Unix-like, and legally,AIX, HP-UX, IRIX, Solaris, Tru64, A/UX and z/OS (Unix subsystem) can all be called UNIX.
