I want to put two sticks of the new RAM (top) into the laptop which is currently sipping on only one stick of the old RAM (bottom).

All the little shiny metal bits line up.

But the little notch doesn't.

Is this a really poor way of keeping me from inserting the RAM because it's incompatible? Or is it compatible and I just need to make the notches line up?

You've got a stick of DDR and a stick of DDR2. They're not the same...

Yeah, the old RAM is DDR PC2700, whereas the new sticks are DDR2 PC2-5300. Wrong interface type.

I have two sticks of 256MB each of PC2700 here, yours for the cost of postage (cheap!). But not as large capacity as you might be hoping for. You can add one of those to the 512MB already there, for a total of 768MB.

Cheers

Thanks, guys. Usually keyed connections are really obvious, not microscopic. :-)

Thanks for the 256 offer, Mark, but it's only worth the hassle if I can get the machine up to at least a gig.

Fortunately the two 512s I had were free, and can go to a better home by returning to their owner.
