Renaming CD and DVD drives

Sorry, but I can't remember how. I tried the standard way in the Device Mangler, but it does not appear to handle them the same way as a hard drive rename? Not necessarly the letter, just the name, so I can ID which of three it snaggs to what letter. Since I have multiples, my simple brain can't seem to wrap around it. Running Windows XP Pro, with Nervous Pack 3.
Thanks

I'm not sure you can. It usually changes the displayed name to that of the CD that's inserted, doesn't it?

Start, control panel, administrative tools, computer management, storage, disk management, click on the CD drive's "square" in the list on the bottom of the screen, Action, all tasks, Change Drive Letter and Paths.

You can't change the name, since, as Bitt says, the name is just the volume label of the currently-inserted disc.
As Tony says, you _can_ change the drive letter, so you could change them to D, E and F (or X, Y and Z) from top to bottom, which would make it easier to remember which is which.

Thanks guys, I already knew about changing the drive letter and path, but was just hoping I could change the actual name when a disk WAS NOT in the drive.
I'll just stick with the drive letters for now.
Thanks again!

You could always create shortcuts to the drives, name them how you want and put them on the Desktop or My Documents. Admittedly that isn't going to help everywhere though.

Hi, I already knew about changing the drive letter and path, but was just hoping I could change the actual name when a disk WAS NOT in the drive. You can change the default name for drive E in the registry:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\E]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\E\DefaultLabel]
@="Upper CD"

Wow, that's awesome. You have to add the keys, but once you do, it works. Nice trick.

This actually takes care of a pet peeve of mine: Alphabetic keyboard selection of drives in the "My Computer" screen. Just name the CD/DVD drive's "default label" to start with its drive letter...
Nice.

Hi, That sounds awesome...I dont see any DriveIcons in the reg..Do you mean I need to add the entire key as listed in the post above? I really have never added anything to the reg...just modified it a bit...? you can enter the "Code" in my posting above in your favorite text editor and save it as "drivename.reg". When you double click on this file it will get imported automagically. You can also change the drives icon when adding something like this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\E\DefaultIcon]
@="%systemroot%\\system32\\shell32.dll,194" Alex

Not quite, you need "REGEDIT4" at the top of the text file.

Not quite, you need "REGEDIT4" at the top of the text file. It's a later version of the registry editor data file format. The line he already had at the top of the file should be sufficient for XP and later. I think. Not sure. I always prefer saving things in the REGEDIT4 format anyway.

Wow, that's awesome. You have to add the keys, but once you do, it works. Nice trick. Works fine on removable USB drives, too. And timely -- I just bought a "7-in-1 card reader". Personally, I count it as 4-in-1, but it's nice to have the icons and labels on the drives. Now, if only I had some Memory Stick media or SmartMedia cards, so that I could figure out which one was G: and which one was H:... Nice; thanks.
