I've got 2 NOD32 licenses, which I've not used for a year or so, and I've not checked to see if they've expired.

We got a minor USB key virus at work last week, so I'm thinking of putting AV on my home PCs. There are four (other than the Linux virtuals): 1x Windows 2003 x64, 2x Windows Vista (both currently x86, but I think I might move one of them to x64 this weekend) and 1x Windows XP, which the wife uses. Oh, and the media center, but it's got a dead video card (again), so I'm going to trash it.

Is NOD32 still the best? Given that the Windows 2003 x64 box is a server (and I don't need on-demand), I could install ClamWin on that box -- does it support x64?

On the advice of the "Wise Ones" who post here, I tried NOD, still use it. I've never regretted that. It's one of those Apps, that just works, without fuss or bother.

AVG Free supports all those operating systems[*edit* Oops, it doesn't support 2003 server for free]. I only use it because it's free, though. If I paid for one I'd use NOD32. Check the licenses first.

I've had a little difficulty with AVG Free version 8, but I think they've ironed out most of the problems by now. Build 138 seems good.

I have Clamwin on my portable apps drive, but I've never used it or even read about users' experiences with it. Does anyone here use it?

Does it allow you more than one free license per household? Last time I checked it didn't. I need at least 3.

Also, AVG isn't exactly flavour of the Internet after the "pretending to be Internet Explorer and downloading pages before people need them" shenanigans...

I think I'm going to go with NOD32, and pay for it -- it's relatively good value, and I think I might be eligible for an upgrade price from my old 2 licenses.

You can just turn off that feature in AVG of course.

Yeah, but AVG need to learn that it was a stupid feature to include in the first place, so I'd rather not give them my business.

Yikes! I think that's taking it a bit far. They've definitely been feeling the heat from that decision, and I thought they did something to help lessen the effects of it. I agree, it's a bad idea.

As far as licenses, I'm not sure what you mean. They might not allow more than one, but that hasn't stopped me I have it on three machines

If what I read one place is correct, then what they did, was to instead of actually fetching the pages from the search result page, they just got the DNS replies from the same pages, and still show that the pages are safe. And, IMO, that's even worse. Unless they now test as you click the link. But then there's no point in checking the DNS for all the other sites from the search result page in the first place.

Where can I do that? I can't remember if it was LinkScanner or something else, but there was something I wanted to turn off, but couldn't for the life of me find where to do it.

Yeah LinkScanner is what it's called.

Open the AVG control panel and then the LinkScanner page. Uncheck "Enable AVG Search-Shield"

Also right click on the LinkScanner icon from the main control panel page and select "Ignore component state" so it doesn't whinge about being disabled.

I've been using Avast for a few years now. Seems to work pretty good, and it's free for non-commercial use.

I tried Avast, but I really dislike the interface, although I think AVG's interface has gotten worse in version 8...

Anyone know how good or bad the AV scanner in Comodo Personall Firewall PRO is? I'm planning to replace my ZoneAlarm installs with Comodo, and since I didn't really like the new AVG 8, I was thinking of getting rid of that one as well.
