I thought I would showoff some pictures of my empeg component box I built.

http://427.org/pictures/empegbox/

The box was made from 304 stainless steel and has heli-arched corners. I wrapped it in silver vinyl.

It also has docking Ethernet. I fabricated an L bracket and attached it to the threaded hole in the back of the sled. The Ethernet plug is held onto the bracket by a zip cord.

The lid (bottom) is not finished yet. The plan is to vinyl wrap it also and just pressure fit it in the bottom.

This is really nice. Some should make and sell these, i'm sure there'd be a market for them.

Good work :-))
Now the empeg is perfect as a part of your home stereo and looks good between the other components!

Thanks.

Selling the complete unit is WAY to much work, I do not think I would want to build these in quantity. I was thinking of selling just the metal box. If there is enough interest I will look into the cost of getting some more metal boxes made.

I think I would be interested. I'm getting an empeg this week, so let me know what the cost would be. Thanks and congrats on a very cool install.

I was thinking of selling just the metal box.

if you did build them in quantity, could you get them powder coated and supply the cables. You would definitely want prepaid orders first!

It would be a great kit box.

Very cool, post the cost, I'd be interested in just a case & do the rest myself or maybe you could sell as kit w/the same parts you used in yours, sort of a Heathkit type thing.

Sorry guys. I checked and they are not interested in making anymore. Mine was made as a favor. They said to do a small run of only 10 is not worth their time to setup the machines and such.

Later,

Hunt around though and you will find some posts on my stereo stand which could be built as single jobs by my semi retired father.

I have a tip for all those out there using a docking mount for a home application. Using the docking connector for the audio works fine, but it isn't the best solution for power supply as it thinks it is in a car so me solution is to take the audio out with the docking connector and for power use the empeg power supply thread it through the hole in the back of the cage. Then tape a stiff piece of wire (i use a bike wheel spoke) onto the wire just behind the plug and then and then when you slide the empeg in it pushs the wire through the hole. stopping it from snagging up.

I have fitted docked ethernet which is quite easy by fixing the wire but not the plug so it has a little bit of freedom to wobble. If wanted i could post some pictures.

This is not as phalic as it looks it is the picture of the power cable attached to a very expenisive double butting bike wheel spoke that pushes the cable through the hole in the back of the cage.

It has been pulled out a wee bit further than normal for clarity

The red box is an old drill box which has been glued onto the back of the cage with a hot glue gun and the ethernet cable is then glued to this with hot glue.

You can also see the power cable coming through the hole in the back of the unit as it is pushed back by the empeg with no kinks or foul ups.
You can see if you go down this route you need a good bit of room behind the cage and tape up the rod, wire, spoke carefully so it doesn't foul

This is the final view minus the telly which is not essential to a succesful system.

My father is desperate to make another stand as he is sure he can improve on it so if intrested let us know

I have been wanting to build the same thing for my MKII but the store does not have the docing sleds available to buy. Did you buy your extra one when you bought the unit or by other means?

As soon as I can get another 2 sleds (Rio Customer service e-mailed this week and said "in a week or so"), I'll install them in the WRX (delivery on June 16!) and a component box.

For the component box, I found a not-so-cheap (~$30) aluminum project box at a Seattle electronics outfit called Radar Electric. It's about the size of a VCR (they have a bunch of sizes) and is open on one side (top or bottom dependoing on whether you're in north or south hemisphere). I'll probably have it powder coated in black before final assembly.

Many thanks for the pictures of everyone's projects. I have been noodling how to build the connections for RJ45 and power and was particularly helped by the l bracket pics. To take that to a further level of craziness, I was thinking about embedding a RJ45 plug/cord in a custom-molded epoxy collar which could then be drilled for bolting (adjustable, even, with slots) to the L bracket. Also, I wonder about doing the same -- mould an epoxy collar for the power connector and bolt it to the sled -- but could I get it fixed in a way that would reliably dock (Hmmm...mold a little docking collar to glue around the hole???).

I think I read in another post that you could fool the Empeg into believing it is on "home"/AC power be putting a dummy plug. If so, I could still wire it up through the harness and maybe use a dummy plug that is a little thinner -- easier to dock but still separates the contacts inside the Empeg. For the Mark 3 model (that I am only inventing in my mind) a nice feature would be a dial or DIP switch on the sled that is wired back to the connector and which let's you assign a unique ID if you have multiple sleds -- home=0, car=1, boat=2, car2=3, etc. and allows persistent settings for each sled.

Why wait for the Mk3 the mk2 already has this when the radio module appears.

Aha! I didn't know that. Of course, as it turned out, I didn't plan to buy a tuner module for boat or car (I decided on a side-by-side install in both cases with a traditional single DIN receiver) or for home, but what you are saying is that any sled with a tuner module attached will allow the Empeg to store a unique profile distinct from other plugged-in-sled profiles?

Hmmm. wonder if there's any way to fool the Empeg through the tuner module plug short of buying 3 tuner modules?

Perhaps I should clarify. The tuner module does allow you to set an ID (16 positions, IIRC). The software doesn't (currently) pay any attention.

Roger - not necessarily speaking for empeg
