Er .. in the stereo slot - there are converters available from the Audi Concert (or whatever) to normal DIN slot.

Also is the 4 Gigabyte drive available
I wasn't aware there had ever been a 4GB - I thought the smallest Mk1 was 6GB - either way, you can only buy RioCar's right now, which have the smallest capactiy of 10GB AFAIK.

You may still be able to get a second hand mk1 on ebay or similar (check the For Sale board for more details), but you'll have to be quick!

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'm just looking for an in dash mp3 player that doesn't use cds. I found this http://www.empeg.mars.org/faq.php3 that might be mk1 or whatever, but is the riocar player the same as the empeg mk2?

Yes, the RioCar is the empeg in a different name.

Empeg are a wholly owned subsiduary of Rio (read - own 100%). So the product (previously empeg) is now RioCar.

The faq is talking about the MK1, and that page is woefully out of date.

Here's a link the the Rio webpage, which is uptodate.

RioCar Homepage

Hope this helps.

BTW - take a look at the FAQ section of the board - there's a whole bunch of really useful information on there, especially about things to know about installs, etc.

Don't let us put you off - everyone here *loves* their empeg (to some degree at least!).

The empeg Mark 2 and the Rio Car are the same product, just different brand names.

They are designed to go into the dash of the car and completely replace the existing radio.

Although you might be able to come up with a custom installation that allows you to have the original A4 radio along with the empeg, it won't be easy. More information can be found in the FAQ

The Mk.1 shipped with 4, 10 and 20Gb models - the Mk.2 had 6, 12, 18 and 36Gb (later 20Gb and 40Gb) and the Rio Car ships with 10, 20, 30 and 60Gb.

Fred,

You can see the evolution of the Empeg Mk1 -> Empeg Mk2 -> RioCar on the Geek Site definitely worth checking out, if you are interested.

It's also got some scary photos of the empeg crew - probably best to ignore them at this point .

Carrying turbines in your hand luggage doesn't reinforce that in any way of course.

Well, almost the same. The rio-car has, as a later issue empeg-car mk2, various tweaks to the design - a different rotary control (doesn't slip), 16MB of dram instead of 12MB (chip availability), and a few fixes to the PCB to address the most common weaknesses of the empeg-car mk2 design (ie, anything which caused a warranty return, we tried to fix so we wouldn't get rio-car's coming back).

Oh come on, that was a 100mW argon laser, not a turbine. Be reasonable.

Hugo,

how can I tell if my Empeg is one of these later issue players (i.e. identical to the Rio Car)? Is it apparent from the serial number?

All empeg players are rev.2 - all Rio Car players are rev.2A.
