It would help if the light source was coming from the other direction.

I know, but I guess that's why it can only be "as convincing as possible". it doesn't need to fool the Feds or anything

It looks like the picture of the pope has been lit from on camera flash to me, I think it's always going to look a little strange trying to mix that with a naturally lit head.

The Pope is a bit like Wurzel Gummidge, in that replacement heads should be freely available on the Internet. Perhaps you should just find one that's lit the same way as your aspiring cardinal?

Peter, it was very difficult to find any photos of the Pope with someone next to him facing forward like that. I can't be too fussy.
