Anyone know what's the newest model of Linksys router compatible with third-party firmware? My favorite firmware, Tomato, seems to support only older devices, though I can probably still find a WRT54-GL if I had to.

What type? 802.11n?

From looking at the list of supported devices for DD-WRT, it is a minefield for support. Most of the newer devices are either experimental, not supported or require specific hardware versions.

If you had to? They're easily found. I just get mine where I get everything else, at Newegg. Only $50.

I believe that all support for Tomato has ceased for some time now. It seems to me that the culture at Linksys/Cisco won't breed another model like the WRT54G/L, so I'm not sure if people would pick up the Tomato project again. I have an intense dislike for DD-WRT, as they don't have the first clue how to make the process user friendly.

Yup. The WRT54GL aka WRT54G v4 is still a current Linksys product.

The newer routers just aren't as popular for hacking as the WRT54G. They've also not done a significant hardware/software change due to cost reduction like the WRT54G so a WRT54GL style model isn't necessary.

The Linksys products aren't actually designed by Linksys/Cisco. The hardware designs and software are all purchased from design companies. I can't remember who actually designed the original WRT54G but the source code has their name plastered all over the place.

I've replaced all of my WRT54Gs now with Cisco APs.

I've found DD-WRT to be similar in operation to the stock Linksys firmware. If you can configure the stock firmware then you can configure DD-WRT.

Go look at OpenWRT if you want "non user friendly" :P

Maybe it was simply the process of actually finding, distinguishing, and downloading the correct firmware that always bothers me. Their download site is horrible.

I just found out that the person that I was supposed to install this for still has dial-up, so I can forget about this. Phew.

It's at their cottage, not primary home, so it wouldn't normally be that bad. But they're spending at least a month at a time there during the spring/summer.

I may come back to this if they ask me to find out whether or not they can get broadband up there. I have a feeling they can, but I'm not going to volunteer that information and end up making (unpaid) work for myself. wink

It seems they have made another new hacker-friendly model with the WRT-160NL. There's no alternative firmware (yet) for it though...

Ooooo, I like! And only $79 at Newegg.

I really hope someone picks up on the development of Tomato and puts it on there.

The only additional feature I'd love to see is dual-band.

Are you sure Tomato is no longer being updated? The last version, 1.25, was released less than a month ago on May 25th.

Really? Maybe someone picked it back up again. I could have sworn there used to be a message on the page saying that development had stopped.

Well, the update I'm talking about is still on Polarcloud.com, the same site I've always downloaded Tomato from.

Maybe he's no longer gong to try getting it to work on any other devices? The fixes in 1.25 were relatively minor, so perhaps that's all that's getting done now.

Yeah, I've always gotten it from there too, but I distinctly remember something on the page saying that development had stopped. Oh well, I'm happy to be wrong. Hopefully he'll try to adapt it for the Linksys N router. I've got to imagine it's at least being looked in to...
