Just wondering... what would be the technological overhead of adding AM radio functionality to the RioReceiver in a future version? Actually, though, something i'd love more than AM radio capability would be Police and Emergency scanner frequency ranges.

Many people have scanners in their vehicles for a variety of reasons... it would be really cool if one could tune in to that sort of radio dialouge when you're stuck stuck in a traffic jam (to see what is wrong up ahead) or, i guess, when you're in a high-speed chase running from the cops (and you wanna know where they're deploying the spike strips) hmm... i've said too much.

does anyone else think that a police scanner frequency would be cool in the receiver? personally, i'd buy one in an instant if it had such a feature.

Well depends, like here in Belgium we have this silly rule. You can sell for example radar detectors over the counter with no problems, you can install them in your car no problem, you just are not allowed to turn them on.

The Rio Receiver is a home networked audio thin client - it isn't intended to go anywhere near a car, and it has no interface for a radio tuner of any type.

The Rio Car, on the other hand, has a tuner interface for a which an AM/FM tuner will become available within a few weeks. We have no plans to implement a police band scanner - the morals and legalities of that are WAY too suspect!

Shame. I hate being stuck in what seems to be unnecessary traffic and not knowing why. It happens all too often on the M1 near Nottingham. These days it's normally just stupid people slowing down to look at the floods. It makes me soooo angry when my journey is normally 1 1/2 hrs anyway. You certainly can't rely on local traffic reports. This is the one thing I thought I would miss by not having a radio but, no. I've also tried the WAP traffic reports and they are useless as well. What we really need is to be able to link into motorway cameras and view them on our empeg displays.

Actually, here in the US, police band scanners are very common. You can walk into any Radio Shack and buy one. There's nothing illegal or immoral about it. I get the feeling that they're constitutionally protected or something; we have the right to keep tabs on what our government is up to.

I don't mean to suggest that Rio should get into the scanner business, that's a big can of worms. These products have been developed into very sophisticated devices, and it'd be hard to do it well. The other products have already matured.

Funny thing! It's pretty different in Europe. In many states it isn't allowed to use police band scanners or to sell them. There's a funny thing about radar detectors: People are allowed to build them but not to use them...

Well - as empeg covers not only the US-market they have to go common ways of legallity - so I think that's the reason why they don't implement police band scanners... .. though - it would be cool to have some

The UK police are switching to an encrypted digital radio system at the moment so scanners wouldn't be a lot of use anyway.
