I can't open Gmail.

Even if I manually key into the URL:

http://mail.google.com/mail/

and hit the enter key, something expands the url to this:

https://mail.google.com/mail/?zx=1uk5vussgh1ej&zx=10vcl1iseyh
2f&zx=7qif8wmphjvb&zx=yrvynccdo648&zx=24huyak1i1ad&zx

jMw&gausr=douglasburnside%40gmail.com

[I added carriage returns so that the long line wouldn't mess up the bbs formatting... ]

and I get a Page Load Error from firefox saying

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

and

The browser has stopped trying to retrieve the requested item. The site is redirecting the request in a way that will never complete.

A similar thing happens when SWMBO tries to access Yahoo mail on this computer.

I have not disabled or blocked cookies; mail (from both Google and Yahoo) was working just fine a couple of hours ago. If I exit FireFox and restart it and try Gmail again, the same thing happens, but with a different batch of URL garbage. I guess next I'll try Dogbert's Tech Support (Shut Up and ReBoot) and see if that helps. Meanwhile...

Any ideas what is going on here?

What happens if you start from google.com and click on their link to gmail? Same issue?

Have you tried another browser? Perhaps Firefox is borked. Are you absolutely certain you have no malware?

The only other thing I can think of is that it's not on your end but GMail's. I've been having major slowness issues with it the last couple days.

http://gmail.com ? although that just redirects to http://mail.google.com.au/mail for me (note the .au for my location)

Working fine here. I'd clear cache and probably cookies too.

Yes.

But SWMBO managed to fix it.

She just waited a couple of hours, tried it, and it worked.

Go figure.

Happens to me all the time when my wife and I use gmail (or other google products) on the same machine. Another way to fix it immediately is to delete your cookies. Not sure why though.

On the newer versions of Firefox, you can go to Tools -> Clear recent cache and delete the last hour (when you are on a page other than GMail) to fix it also.

Yeah, that only works for me sometimes Tim. Deleting all cookies always works.
