Networking and IP addresses are just black magic to me, I haven't the faintest idea of what they do or how they work.

Is this something worth pursuing, are there any real advantages/disadvantages to it?

I use it, and it is a much better service for me than relying on the incumbent service provider to sort DNS!

I have had no outages or issues, (and even got a free sticker - woo)

Very simple to set up, but if you don't have a need I would say don't bother. :-)

I have been using it for a while. All I did is put the open DNS servers in for DNS on my Linksys. So I wouldn't say there is anything to the the setup.

I did it because it seemed like my ISPs DNS servers were slow and now if I type in a url wrong I get the nice open DNS search page instead of the overloaded one from the ISP.

I'm a little surprised that the article mentions Google so often, yet never once mentions that Google has their own DNS, which I use. I couldn't tell you if it's made any difference...

I will say that I find OpenDNS completely useless as a filtering service. I do tech support for a church, and one of the ways I help them filter out bad stuff on their network is OpenDNS. It blocks some stuff, but then lets other sites right through. Even on their highest filtering level, they still let sites like Vivid.com through, which I find very odd.

+1 for Google's DNS service. I like that they somehow got trivially easy to remember IP addresses (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). They don't have all the other fancy OpenDNS services, but they do seem to be a good deal more reliable than my DSL provider.
