While the iPhone is locked to AT&T, T-Mobile, the only other suitable carrier, seems to be more then happy to help those willing to jailbreak and unlock their iPhones. T-Mobile have a Non T-Mobile Phones forum on their site, with posting by T-Mobile employees on the post unlocking steps needed.

I wonder how well this would work with their pre-paid plan...time for a little reading.

Keep in mind any iPhone on T-Mobile will be limited to the Edge data network, and won't be able to access 3G. This is due to the non standard frequencies T-Mobile chose in the US for their 3G network. A future iPhone radio might support it, but none of the existing ones do currently.

Like Tom said. I wouldn't do it, personally. I had a G1 on AT&T for a year, which gave me the same problem. I can't go back to EDGE... Don't make me go back to EDGE!!!

Actually I would skip the data plan altogether regardless of carrier. My current needs are meet with a Nokia 2115i and a prepaid plan, so I would do similar with the iPhone. The gain for me would be the apps and wifi abilities - yup I know I'd be giving up a lot of functionality, but it is functionality that I currently don't have and I think I'd rarely use.

Of course this master plan all depends on finding an iPhone for cheap...

Well then I guess you'll be fine! The only problem is finding an iPhone unlocked. I doubt you'll find a 4 for cheap, but considering AT&T is now offering the 3GS for $50 (on contract, of course), you might be able to find that model for less money than you used to.

I'll sell my legitimately unlocked world-capable iPhone 4 for $950 wink

I'd be making only about $50 on that too. Not including what I've spent on apps, so it would be a wash.

Next week everyone should have the Verizon iPhone to choose from and I wouldn't be surprised to hear about an official unlocking procedure sometime before the end of the summer either.

Canadian carrier Rogers has announced that they will unlock at the end of the contract term for $50. How generous of them.

Sprint's $69.99 unlimited plan and an iPhone would be awesome.

Picked up a 3g iPhone for cheap from my brother in law, dropped in a $15 GoPhone SIM from AT&T, disabled the non-wifi data capabilities of the phone, and it works. I don't know if AT&T will catch this at some point and tell me I need to get a non-prepaid phone plan for a smart phone an iPhone.

Do you get visual notification of waiting voicemail messages?

Voicemail playback?

SMS messaging works both ways?

Has the phone been upgraded to the latest firmware from Apple?

Don't know I've not checked.

Yes, at 20¢ per SMS.

Yes, this was done prior to my getting it.
