Hi guys..I wonder if someone can give me a little help. I was using my EMPEG last weekend for about 2 hours in the car, removed it overnight, tried to use it again in the morning and all I get is the logo screen, nothing else, just stops there. Hard drive sounds like it's spinning & seeking when the logo comes up but nothing after that. Any ideas? I'm confident that it didn't get bashed etc
Any tips on diagnosis?
I'm guessing that it's a hard drive problemo...and am guessing (remembering) that the logo is in firmware.
Don't be afraid to talk techie, all help appreciated!

Any tips on diagnosis?
To diagnose, you need to use any terminal program to see waht the empeg's start-up messages say. An easier alternative may be to give your empeg a fresh shot of 1.03. If the troubels are software related, and assuming your music databases are OK, the empeg should come to live *if* you can manage a software refresh.
If you can't reload 1.03, you may be in the deep trouble that you fear .
I'd go for a software refresh, and if that fails, send support a boot-up log.
Bon courage Henno

Hook it up to your pc with the serial cable, leave power disconnected.
Fire up Hyperterminal 115200/8/N/1/none direct to the COM port you connected the player. Make sure it is connected, look for a running clock in the bottom left part of the screen.
Apply power and see what's happening. Post this information to this thread so everybody can take a look at it!

Yeah guess I should have mentioned...I tried a software update (all techie think alike I guess) the software couldn't see the unit. Also tried pinging it's IP address - no luck. Used hyperterminal (Yuck) to try and view the startup messages (don't know what speed etc to set to though tried 19k2) but nothing (apart from some rubbish chars)...me thinks it dead...

(Edited out all my suggestions - everyone already replied! There were 0 replies when I started! Jeepers!)
I had a similar problem with my empeg last weekend - except my hard drive was making ungodly noises (see the blender thread). Its now in the able hands of Empeg support being tended to.
Good luck!

Used hyperterminal but nothing (apart from some rubbish chars)..
The rubbish chars could well mean that you're close to getting contact!
19k2 won't work though. You need to set to 15200/8/N/1/none. Hope it works
comment from Edwin (see nest post on this thread)
That would be 115200/8/N/1/none.... ;o)
oops; missed a '1 in typing! You're right, Edwin, it should be 115200/8/N/1/none... ;o)

Look in the FAQ section of this BBS for an entry on how to make Hyperterminal work properly with the Empeg. You have to get the settings right, and the FAQ shows a screen shot with red arrows pointing to everything you need to change. If you're getting garbage on the screen, your player isn't shot, you just don't have the settings in Hyperterminal right.
It sounds like you've got a loose disk drive cable or a loose jumper (if in a two-drive configuration). Check the boot output from Hyperterminal to determine if it's finding the drives or not. ___________

Contact carsupport@riohome.com and I'll talk you through troubleshooting the player.

It should be locating your hard disk after "probing primary interface". It's not.
Prolly a loose drive cable. Support can walk you through it. ___________

Excellent I guessed that was what it was. I guess I need an Allan key though...I'm in the process of moving at the moment and you guessed it all my kit is @ the other end...never mind I'll speak to support get the low down and tackle it tomorrow when I can get hold of a set. So two things come to mind
1) What can I do to stop this from happening again (assuming it's the cable) as Iv'e seen a few people have the problem.
2) Iv'e got the probolem with the loose volume knob (ooer) as well, what's the recommended fix for that (might as well sort everything at once)
Many thanks
Mick
BTW: even with the problems this is probably my favorite toy, pity it isn't a bit cheaper, trying to convince people to 'go empeg' ain't easy with the current price tag!

If it is the loose cable, a small dab of Hot Glue will prevent a recurrence. If you send it to Empeg, they'll do it for you, correctly and under warranty.
The loose knob is solved by e-mailing support and asking for the updated knob. They send it to you with installation instructions. ___________
