Ok gang I've got the prototype worked out. Take a look. What do you all think.
Unfortunately they're going to run more because it takes twice the amount of time to route since the material is only available in eighth inch thickness. They'll be $30 each.
Hopefully I'll get some time this coming week to make a small run in each of the colors.
Stay tuned, I'll post when they're ready to go out.

Put me down for the Orange & a Purple if you can do one, I know that's not one of the colors, but just as a future vote for a color.

I take it you mean between the two Deep Blues.
Nothing besides the flash.
I left the flash one up in case anyone was interested in how I ended up making it work. It's still using eighth inch material but everything behind the fascia is routed down to sixteenth inch thickness now. Which you can still see somewhat in the flash picture.

One more thing guys.
There seems to be a bit of interest in these and the run I will be doing is going to be 5 to 10 pieces of each color depending on how many I can squeeze into the material I have, so it is going to be first come first serve.

Anyone that will send me a working drive for my Empeg somewhere in the vicinity of 20g I will send a complete set of lenses in all the colors plus a smoke and a clear. which would come to about $260 for the Mark II.
Anyone want to take me up on this offer?

Just got mine, very cool interesting how you routed down the excess from 1/8" to 1/16" in the areas that matter t make the material work. The neon red I ordered looks pink until you put it on then the VFD green turns it on. I never really thought about the fact your not working from a scratch white light but have to start colorizing from a teal green or aqua display light. Personally I wouldn't know how to make a green display look a particular color by applying a different color filter. There's the trick if the dispaly started out as a true white the task would be easy. Anytime you apply a color filter your decreasing the light output but if you do it right the filter can scatter the available light & brighten it, hence my faceplate (Neon Red) seems to brighten the display light somewhat from the naked display yet. Good work, Steve alright I want a Purple faceplate, anyone else like to see that color created? I hope. Any neon color I would suspect would brighten any display light available. A darker faceplate color would make the lights seems lighter because the darks or non-lit segmenbts are darker. OK I've had a few drinks writing this & I'm rambleing but the faceplate I just opened & installed on my EMPEG-car still kicks ass.

The color I must say is more of a glow, the routed edges light up as well, the actual VFD segments aren't a Neon Red color but stay almost the same (some change) as their natural color.

We have already established that empeg without EMR shielding on faceplate still does not constitute an effective antisatalite weapon. Still, it would be interesting if somebody would sit in front of such a player (while it plays and displays the most hysterical visual one can find) with a portable multiband radio with analog tuning and try to find any interference. If some is found, it would be interesting to find the approximate range (I mean, will we drown FM reception in all surrounding cars on a hundred meter stretch of a highway or is it confined to half a meter range and to SW frequency of Radio Babina Greda*?)

You talk like my lenses are letting enough interference out to bring down an airplane.
What kind of equipment do you think Empeg is building anyway? You must think it's pretty spurious.
Although I haven't used test equipment to measure it, I still use it around a bunch of different electronics, and have found interference to be negligable.

Your right I tried to get out the fact the display itself doesn't turn Neon Red but the glow is, it looks just like your pictures that you posted of the diff. faces.

I'd appreciate if you posted pictures of "smoke" and "clear". Also, it would be helpful if you also include photos of the "stock" empeg colors so we could see the difference. For that matter, it would be nice to see all the colors, including the stock empeg ones, photographed under somewhat more controlled lighting conditions.
Toying with ordering myself a clear display...

Hm, perhaps I didn't put enough smileys in my post.... . I am definitely not trying to spoil your valiant effort to provide people with lenses that match their car panel lighting or are just cool.
What I suggested was that somebody with nothing better to do (e.g. while waiting for a gf in a car or something) see whether there is any interference detectable without overly heroic measures.
Cheers! Dragi "Bonzi" Raos

I have been trying to get a web page for ordering together for some time, but I don't know how to build them too well and can't seem to find much help so it's going slowly.
Unfortunately I cannot supply pictures of Empeg original colors other than the Mark I's original Blue since I don't have any others.
I do have pictures of the colors available here. for reference.
Smoke and Clear I don't have pics up for. But I will work on it, though pgrzelak had some up after he installed it in his Riviera. I don't know if he still has them up or not.

Greetings!
I have the smoke image on my install page. I do not have the clear on-line anymore. If you are on the fence about the purchase, don't be. The smoke especially is excellent, and is a perfect match to my dash. If you have the standard US VFD behind smoke lighting, this is the lens for you. Paul G.

The unit fails EMC testing without a coated faceplate, so removing it will invalidate the FCC and CE approvals.
In practice you may get some localised TV interference, AM radio noise, and interference with low power RF devices such as remote keys, garage openers and that kind of thing. I think it unlikely that there would be sufficient emissions to affect neighbours and so forth.

OK well I stand corrected on the fact the display segments didn't change colors, when I finally saw it in car, the outside light really changed the look of display immensely. Inside they still looked blueish. The (swallow) VFD does look lavender or purple, I originally wanted Orange or Purple & pretty much got both colors in one.
