According to what I see on my computer, it has been 68 hours since anybody has made a post on this bbs. This is NOT NORMAL.
Is something wrong with my computer, or is everybody staying incommunicado?

Well, it is summer, so there are more things to do outside. And the community here has certainly been in a long-term a gradual contraction.

I'll pull the new baby excuse. I've checked for new posts probably 4 times in that period though. Perhaps I'll start a new topic now...

Haha. I, too, have been checking regularly but not posting. But that might have to do with the beach trip I'm currently on. I've spent the last two days doing nothing but sitting on the beach, in a comfortable lounge chair, under an umbrella, listening to podcasts. It's been ~78 degrees F all day both days, with no humidity and a lovely breeze from the south. So I haven't been at a computer all that much Tomorrow looks like the weather will be the same, so I'll probably be out there again before we have to head back on Tuesday.

I was never one of the most prolific posters, but for the last week or so Scotland has been as hot as it has ever been in my memory so I'm spending a lot of time at the beach, up mountains and even just in the back garden.

I've been away for a while- since November, I guess. Lots of changes- -job ended (Oct) -moved to Seattle (Feb) -married (June) Now I'm looking for work since the whole move/married thing is done. I'm not often on a pc these days. I've been getting my internet fix via my old Droid 1 and now through an Incredible 2 (both rooted and ROM'd; lots of fun!) I haven't tried very hard to get on here via the phones, though, hence my absence. I hope to see Tony at WesterCon next week. http://drupal.westercon65.org/?q=node/6My brother and his wife are deeply involved in the SF convention scene and will be visiting my wife and I during their adventure to these northern latitudes. We'll get to run around the convention for a couple of days. Anyone know of a factory automation or welding engineering job opening in Seattle? Oh, and the Perseid Meteor Shower Campout weekend at my ranch near San Jose is still on for this year- Aug 10-11-12 (moron that in another post)

WELCOME! If I'd known you were in town I would have told you to come to the Molly Lewis Show we just did, boy that was amazing. We've also got a house concert coming up on Sunday, feel free to come by and say hi! Other than that, definitely come say hi at Westercon! Our (still in beta) schedule is: 9pm Friday: Vixy & Tony Interview Noon Saturday: Judge Song Contest 3pm Saturday: Vixy & Tony Concert 5pm Saturday: Kaffee Klatsch with Vixy & Tony (Possible? Not sure) 12:30pm Sunday: Jeff & Maya Concert 2pm Sunday: Performing 101 panel 4pm Sunday: "Opening" ceremonies Don't miss the Jeff & Maya concert, they're good friends and they're awesome. And if you enjoy Westercon, come to Norwescon on Easter weekend every year, in the exact same hotel, which is likely to be even more interesting than Westercon.

I'm finally in vacation. And my house in the mountain, after years of few/no connectivity options, is finally reached by: 1) unreliable but present 3G/UMTS/EDGE signal from one specific operator (which I am (un)happily using now); 2) Reliable WiMax* signal, which I subscribed to few days ago and can't wait to have fully operational. So now i CAN post. Sorry for flooding the board. Don't hate me. I do so with good intent. * So, it turns out it is not WiMax they're using, but a 5GHz 802.11N signal, reaching me from the next village that I can see across the valley, 5Km away. Interesting. Never thought of it as an option for such long distances.

Actually, I have a pic handy. Here's a crop. You can barely see the houses, but the green arrow is pointing to a very small village quite far. That's a pic taken from my window. I am impressed i am getting a 802.11n signal this far.
ISP will install an antenna/router (don't know what brand/model yet) just at the same window this pic was taken from, in clear view of the "remote" village. From their device(s), which will present a standard Ethernet interface with DHCP, I'll build my home network (WRT54G only, for now. Depending how the signal porpagates through the thick old walls, I'll see if I need a repeater or not).

So this is a holiday home for you, or a new permanent residence? Somewhere in Abruzzo?
Cheers

It is holiday home. Well, this is where my family is originally from; this house is in my family since we can remember. This year I have so many vacation days that I MUST use, and so little money to spend on travelling, that I am going to stay here until end of August. I can't complain, though. Rome is awfully hot. Here's quite chilly (1500m on the sea level). Yes, Abruzzo. Not far from Rome. I wish I could live this far from the city.:)
