At this time, there is not an API to interface directly with the player software.

However, you are welcome to write Linux software of your own and run it from the empeg's hard disk. It's essentially a linux computer, and as long as you've got the correct compiler (for ARM), you can write/run any software you like.

Although there is not an API as such, the specifications for talking to the empeg's audio, input, and display hardware are well known, which allows you to write software that can essentially do anything you want on the empeg. Examples can be found at the developer's site and on this BBS.

Also, the "emptool" source code for remotely communicating to the player via ethernet, serial, and USB is publicly available at the empeg.com site. This is the software that sends the MP3s to the player and organizes its playlists. There is already an open-source Java version of this code.

So, to sum up, even though there's no API to interface with the player software, there are plenty of things you can do for writing software of your own.

What did you have in mind? Maybe it's already been done.
