Well, without getting into why it was there in the first place, my Mk 1 empeg was stolen today, along with my sub and amp. Came back from the train, and found one of my rear windows broken. So, if you're in the DC area, and you know of someone trying to sell a Mk. 1 (sn #73), please let me know. Or just return the empeg and possible the head of the person who's got it.
Sigh. The one bright spot is, if the insurance pays up (doubtful), I'll be able to get a Mk 2 to match my wife's. Then we can interchange them.
Course, next to last week's tragedy, I don't feel quite so bad; everything in perspective.

I am very sorry to hear about that.
I've been victimized by this kind of theft twice before, so I know how it feels. You have my sympathies. ___________

Top secret procedure? Let's see... Is it...
1) Each Empeg has a Lo-Jack transmitter, and Rob has a wall-sized map of the world with the location of each Empeg. He's watching our every move...
2) Empeg and SonicBlue send some Italian-American "associates" to locate the stolen Empeg.
or
3) You get a discount on a new Empeg.
Hmm... Just guesses... Sheetz, I'm sure you have all of our sympathies on your Empeg's disappearance. Hope you manage to get it recovered or covered by insurance.

Why is all I can think about now is a cheesy James Bond movie and Hugo sitting in a chair with a cat? And the Empeg offices have been moved to Hugo's underground lair with Rob acting as #2.

I'd pick door number 3 if I were you.

Email the serial number and your details to carsupport@riohome.com to let them know it was stolen.

Second thing I did after putting my post up, I believe.
The good news is the empeg was covered under my homeowners insurance, cause it can be used in the house. Also, as it was ~$1500 for 10 gig when I bought it, I may not be out much besides time and aggravation (and some unrecoverable music!)

Mk 1 empeg was stolen today,
Not to make light of your problem, but... you now have in your posession something very rare and valuable that a a fair number of people on this bbs will covet once they think about it: YOU NOW HAVE ONE OF THE FEW SPARE MARK I SLEDS AVAILABLE IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE!
I predict you will get a few emails as soon as some people read this post.

I was wondering about that did they take the sled or just pull out the unit. I was also thinking maybe it would be a good idea if empeg could check somehow if you have purchased a unit from them when you try to order a sled (that would probably be alot of trouble though)

Aw man, I'm sorry to hear that. That's the only Mk1 I've ever seen in person! That makes me sad .
They didn't break the window with the rally number, did they?
My condolences. DiGNAN

Maybe there should be some kind of system to make the player harder or impossible to use for thieves.
For example identifying software by serial number. So the Empeg homepage asks for serial number when downloading software (emplode or updates) and then wites some crypted code inside the downloadable software that the software can only be used with the player having the same serial. So the thief (or person who bought stolen player) can't use any other serial. In that case when somebody enters serial that is reported to be stolen, he does'nt get the software and, the empeg server logs IP adress and time of request. So the thief can be tracked.
It's just an idea. Of course it's possible to crack any code but this way the it's harder for thief to use the player. Now the stolen players are quite easily useable. The hompage address, where the software is available, is printed on the player. Anybody who knows how to use the internet can download the software start useing it. Veiko

In general, I doubt that the thief even knows what they've got. More likely, their local fence will just say "what the hell's that? No drug money for you", and then it'll end up in a skip. They might rip the disks out first, I suppose.

But that's allso possible that some smart ass tryes the url thats printed on the player. And then its not difficult to figure out what it is how to use it. Whats the point of reporting stolen player to empeg anyway when theres no way to track the users? It would give at least more hope that the player will come out. Veiko

to flog the disks they'd have to know there were disks in it, and you would only know that if you actually knew what it was.

The disks are visible tru the ventilation holes on the top. And it's logical that if the person doesn't know what it is, first he tryes to connect power, open it or try the url on the player (if the person has ever used the internet). Allso they might have a question why anybody would want to connect top of the line amps and subs to the device that is not worth anything. Veiko

We don't discuss the details of our stolen player security process, otherwise there's not much point to having one.

Nice to know there really is such a process. Does it work? Have you had any success so far?
I don't expect that you reveal your secrets, just i think we all want some peace of mind. There allways possible that my player will be missing one day. Veiko
