It seems that the Empeg is able to accept commands from the Kenwood remote before the display is done responding to the previous command.

When attempting to use the Rio remote in the same way, commands entered while the display is busy are usually not executed.

Are you sure you're not just seeing the deliberate delay in some Rio Remote commands?

Some of the commands on the Rio Remote don't execute immediately because the Rio has "hold-down" capability for most of its buttons. Meaning that if you press the button, that's one thing, but if you hold down the button, that's another thing.

In order for this to work, some things have to be delayed slightly. It waits to see if the button was held down before deciding which of the two (potentially confilicting) things to do.

This could be the case. I have not verified that the Rio remote is actually sending commands to the Empeg.

I feel dumb asking, but from what your saying, I gather the Rio remote will function on the older Empeg MK2? If so, I guess I should order one to use with the new v2...

Both the Rio remote and the Kenwood remote will work with all models of empeg/Rio Car player. It is not necessary to buy the Rio remote, but it's certainly nice. There are only a couple of new features you can get with a Rio remote, and they are not critical features. I've got a table of functions in the FAQ at riocar.org if you want to peek at it.

I just got my new RIO remote, and.. wow! What a difference having properly labelled buttons makes! I *never* used the kenwood remote after the first day, because it just plain wasn't obvious what each button might do.. But the RIO remote, (nearly identical, but with correctly labelled buttons) is great!
