Ok, just got my empeg unit friday evening and all working and jamed pack with all my mp3s now. Will be another week or so till I can get this thing installed in my car. The only thing that worries me is that in the manual it mentions make sure your your amp can handle 3.2V RMS. Ok I have no clue what this is and any amp I've looked at will not mention this. Has anyone had any problems with certain amp manufacturers or amps in general. I've got severl options, 1 go cheap and get it installed like this week, basicly 50 watt roadgear amp hooked up to my factory speakers. Or get a pioneer 100watt and also buy some deccent speakers for my door panels.

Now I would like to go the cheap way (for now, will be addind subs and other amps etc.. later) but am conserned on if the cheaper amps will work and exactly what the 3.2V RMS is?

Thanks for any help on clearing this up for me.

It's the input signal voltage to the amplifier. A very cheap amplifier might be only 1V or 2V but the vast majority of amps are 4V or above. Ideally you want a variable input voltage, so you can calibrate the amp to your head unit (so 0dB attenuation from the empeg matches the max gain of your system).

My experience is that even cheap amps have variable input up to 4V.

So if the voltage is lower it will not work? What if it's higher same problem or just something wacky? Sorry I thought I know a good bit about car audio but I supose not after getting this empeg unit, I'll stick to something I know like computers =)

If the amp is rated for, say, a 1V input and you gave it a 4V input, then there would be significant clipping of the signal as you turn up the volume. For best audio quality the full volume (0dB) output of the empeg should equate to the maximum amplification that you desire within your system, which means that the amp needs to be able to accept an input of about 4V.

Any half decent vendor should be able to tell you this characteristic, or check on the manufacturers web site.

Ok that answers my questions then. Thanks for the info now that I know a little bit more of what to look for when buying my cheap-o amp to power my el cheap-o factor speakers, till I get more money saved up to get my car thumping again.

Gotta hate it when someone steals your whole damned system and leaves you hanging.
