It really does (I thought that visuals code leaves the icon on the screen; however, I can really hear disk spinning if I listen through the holes at the top). It does not seem to actually read more often than usually.
Reboot does not cure this (I will see about sync). However, I am positive that I did see it bahaving normally yesterday .
UPDATE: Sync seems to cure it. Go figure...
UPDATE2: Rats! Here it is again! I did several reboots....

I can confirm that I have seen the disk indicator on for prolonged perdiods as well on my MK1.

I noticed my disk stayed spinning when I was in tuner mode last night. (I don't have the icon enabled, but the engine was off[1], so I heard it).

Hmm, I thought I already posted this. Guess I had a brain cramp. Mine stays spun up for long periods as well. Sometimes it goes away, and sometimes not...
I don't have any hard facts on it yet though.

Yep, disk is definitely ON much more of the time than with previous releases (contrary to what the release notes say). More worrisome for me is that the disk STAYS ON even after "power off", so I cannot hope for it to spin down before I unplug the home power thingie from the back. Wonder what it does in the car..

Hmm, I think I might begin to see some kind of logic in this: it seems that the disk stays spun up for, say, half an hour after the boot in AC mode, then behaves normally. Could that be on purpose (to minimize number of spin ups/down when the user is likely to play with playlist selections and the unit is stationary, anyway, so shocks, acceleration and attendant gyroscopic forces etc are not the issue)?
(BTW, I did not had a chance to observe that closely when on DC power. Anyone?)

I watched it keep the disks up with not much activity for the entire length of a 4-5min song while eating at a drive-in place for lunch the other day. It definitly happens in the car as well.

I see similar activity on my Mk2 unit: drives very busy for the first (?) half hour, then they start behaving as expected again (spin up, brief activity, spin down).
Have you guys done the equivalent of "hdparm -S1 /dev/hda" in the player software?

Hm, this morning the disk did not stay up after reboot. Weird...

No, we control all the disk spin up/down cycles, along with different backoffs if the drive is being asked to spin up a lot (eg, user skipping tracks regularly).
There does appear to be a bug in 2.00b3 with something though. It wasn't in 2.00b1 that I remember, either...
