When new posts appear in OT forum, main index correctly shows how many of them are there. However, when I enter the forum, no thread is marked as having new posts. When I enter the uppermost (most recent) thread, new messages are marked as such. I didn't see this strange behaviour on other forums.

This is a long-standing bug in the BBS that has been discussed in the past. No one has been able to track down its cause, and no one running other BBSs based on wwwthreads seems to be experiencing it.

It's not, to my knowledge, related specifically to a given forum. I have had it happen on every forum in the past.

Note that it seems to come and go in "waves" for a given user. For instance, I might have a period of a week where it happens to me, then it clears up for a long time. While things are working fine for me, some other users might report the bug.

Sometimes clearing your cache and cookies can help, but it does not solve the long-term problem.

No, this isn't the same thing... normally, the last-read post from a previous session shows up as unread.

In this new OT forum, all posts are showing up as having been read even though in actuality none of them have been opened.

Yeah, I got the same thing the first time I visited the forum. After I closed my browser and visited later in the day, it's working again. Maybe it's something to do with setting a cookie for the first visit to a new forum...

Same thing here... So, not a problem.

It is indeed a bizarre bug.

It happens 90% of the time on my home machine using IE. It happens under 5% of my time on my office machine running IE. If I use Netscape 6 on my home machine it never happens. If I use Netscape 6 on my office machine it always happens.

This is all completely reproducable...

Both machines have been through the IE5 -> IE5.5 -> IE6 upgrades, none of which changed their behaviour.

A very odd bug. I have resorted to using only IE6 on my office machine and only Netscape 6 on my home machine for reading the BBS.

i find that if i visit the BBS only once per browser session, everything works fine. if i use a single browser to read the BBS, go off somewhere else, and come back again, the bug is triggered.

the simple solution for me is to make sure i always close my browser window when i'm done reading the BBS, and i never have any trouble. i'm running IE 5.5 on win2k.
