So, thanks to our pal Mark Lord, we now have the ability to set a Max Temp Warning. You gotta love it!!! One question though...

What to set this at?

Does anyone have any recomendation for this?

Here's my thinking... Figure out which component in the empeg has the lowest heat tolerence, and base the warning off of that, minus about 5-10 degrees. Hell, if we figured this out, then Mark could even set this as the default. The only reason it would even need to be adjustable, would be if somebody modified the unit somehow. And we know that nobody would ever do that...

OK, so I consulted the FAQ, and here's a blurb:

The technical specifications, directly from the Rio Car web site, are as follows:

Operating range (disks spinning and being read): 5ºc (41ºf) to 55ºc (131ºf)

Standby range (disks spun down): -20ºc (-4ºf) to 60ºc (140ºf)

It looks like 55ºc or 131ºf is our drop dead maximum, so what do you think, set the max at about 50ºc or 121ºf?

Those are operating temperatures at the skin of the hard drive, not ambient.

So if the drive operates at warmer than 55C, it may suffer bearing damage and incur a reduced lifespan. I have another SA-110 based box called a "Netwinder" running my firewall/server (rtr.ca), and there have been instances reported by Netwinder users of drives getting fried for running hot. The box has a rather noisy controllable cooling fan that some folks apparently tried turning off..

Sitting here on my tabletop, my Mk2 Empeg player reads out at 42-43C most of the time, which is about the same as the internal running temperature of my Netwinder server (fan running..). Go figure.

You know, I thought the same thing. But then I also thought, well, the temp sensor must be somewhere on the circuit board, and not actually inside the hard drive, so it's probably somewhat valid... Hmmm... You do bring up a good point though. Internal temperatures will definitely be higher than ambient temperatures, and we need to make adjustments accordingly.

The empeg developers put the sensor in there, maybe they have an idea where to set it...?

Oww uh yea, well I had mine set at 122`F and last night it went off, at night it sure gets your attention almost thought something horribly wrong happened, didn't expect it. I set the alarm about 5`F higher, the temperature inside the vehicle was about 69`F.
