There has been some comments in the past about some annoyance in the difference in using the empeg/rio from
left/right hand drive cars.

It just occured to me that this should be easy to "fix" by turning the display upside-down and alter the button-presses slightly? And then mounting the unit upside down.
The drives should be OK in most cases I guess.

Is there a lot of hijack-work to turn the display upside-down?

If your dash mounts the empeg on a forward sloping angle, then your drives won't just be upside down - they'll be at an angle. The drive tray right now isn't horizontal.

Next is the fact that you'll have the board getting all the rising heat from the drives with no way to ventilate.

The handle will also fold upwards. :)

And lastly, who is this supposed to be a benefit for? I'm assuming left-hand drive people (everyone outside of UK and some British Colonies) - seeing as there is potential for screen blockage on the left side. Something a reworked fascia can remedy. I actually made the blockage worse on my modified fascia, but this was only a temporary solution and something of test anyway.

I don't see the problem...

The empeg guys are in England and they have right-drive cars. They use the player just fine in their right-drive cars.

I'm in the US and we have left-drive cars. I can use the player just fine in my left-drive car.

So if both left-drive and right-drive people have no problem using it, why is there a need to run it upside down?

I could probably dig up the discussion here on the BBS... People wanted the buttons on the right side and the rotary on the left to easier access menues while driving.

And I think most people don't want to do hardware modificaions

I can't say I've ever had any difficulty, in left or right hand drive cars.

Mounting the player upside down is a VERY bad idea. The shock protection won't work properly, and the disk tray will probably work loose after a while.

I brought this up in July I think, Rob convinced me (given the argument he states in this current thread) to not go through with it, even though there's some kernel code which supports an upside down display.

My "fix" for this minor annoyance of a long reach to the volume knob was to get a tuner and a sony stalk remote for the steering wheel.

Now I don't even take my hands off the wheel except to turn the unit on or scan forward/bak in a song (this will hopefully be fixed in next beta).

If that don't work or you can't get a tuner go for a pioneer remote and hijack works very nicely
