There is one technology that I would love to see get here and fast, and that is DVDR. Yes, I know it's here already, but it's too expensive.

I have some questions that I'd love for you guys to help me with or at least point me in the direction of a link.

1) What is the difference between DVDRW and DVDRAM?

2) Is there any place to find out about upcoming products?

3) How long do you think it will be before you can buy one for about $500?

4) What are your opinions on this technology?

I'm really looking forward to the day when I can store my recorded video onto DVD discs. I have some shows that I keep stored on my Tivo for safe keeping (first Daily Show after 9/11, the premiere of Blind Melon BHTM, etc.), and I'd love to store those at high quality and make room for my normal shows.

My other reason for hoping DVDR will get cheaper soon is because my current DVD player is crapping out on me. It was free, so I can't complain, but it's probably the worst, cheapest (in every sense of the word) DVD player on the market. I think it's the Samsung DVD511.

So wat are your thoughts?

You could buy it for around 500$ for several months now.

For DVD-Ram, try http://www.pricewatch.com/1/212/3586-1.htm

Check

For a good definition of the different formats out there.

No no, I'm talking Home Theater System here. Not a DVDR drive.

Something like this.

Sorry then,

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005R867/ref=ase_mysimon-sr-buyce/102-1237165-3699356

Cheapest I can find the DVD1000 for is

http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=phidvdr1000&SVBName=216

1200$

Just like how Consumer standalone CD recorders were and still are relatively expensive, standalone DVD recorders are going to be in the 500$ range for quite a while. Don't rest your hopes on a major drop in price anytime soon :P

Within a year or two we should see prices below $500. Within 2 I'd actually expect prices to be less than $400.
