Arghhh! Sync problems using 8c

So I must admit, I haven't even tried to do a lot of syncing with the unit for a while. I have a 10Gb unit and for a long while I didn't need to change or add music to the catalog. Tonight however, I spent at least an hour and a half getting new playlists created and cleaning up the crap left behind by the limiting ID3 tags. Also fixed a couple of properties that needed work in my current playlists. I go to sync and I got a sync failed message seconds after it said controlling disk. I just upgraded to 8c before I did all this work. Is it possible a fix for one problem broke something else?
It is true I had a bunch of changes to be going in at once, but there's no way I'm gonna try to recreate this problem because it would take me too long. I guess I'll have to go back to precautions for using an unreliable system. Save early and save often. I'll probably only sync one playlist at a time for now.
I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't such a chore to get the playlists setup in the first place, or if there were a way to save your pending changes so you wouldn't have to redo everything if it fails. If I were King, I'd put some kind of disaster recovery log at the top of the list of priorities. If you have the posibility of losing a lot of work when you sync, how about a way to save all the work before you take that leap?

I second this - I can't count how many times I've had the sync destroy the playlists that I've worked on - and this is WITH 8c as well as before 8c... -mark

In case anyone is keeping score, I got another one today when I tried to add songs to two playlists, delete one song, and delete 4 empty playlists. (I know, I just said I'd only do one thing at a time, but what a pain that is). Sync failed at stage five and it rebooted the player.
Whoo-hooo.

It seems to occur more often when you are just updating the ID info and not uploading any files.

I've just finished uploading a new version of the emplode executable that contains some protocol fixes. Could anyone who is having repeatable trouble with beta8c give it a go and report your findings? http://www2.empeg.com/upgrades/test/interim/-- Mike Crowe I may not be speaking on behalf of empeg above :-)

I was having trouble synchronizing; all attemps were failing. Now I can't even read the playlist form emplode.
I get the exact same behaviour with the new emplode. =(
"The synchronization process failed during stage 5 with error 0xfffff7cc"
I've tried reloading consumer 8c in the player which works well enough but no change.

I had this (or a similar) problem (where emplode no longer sees anything on the empeg, and the empeg has no visible playlists at all from the front panel).
Removing (I believe, mac can correct me if I'm wrong) the files in /empeg/var/ (the directory which has the "database" file in it, with a few others) and then letting the unit rebuild the databases solved the problem for me.
ObDisclaimer: I don't have a 100% clear recollection of it, I could be wrong, sanity check your work. Don't blame me if your unit fails, I don't work for Empeg and thus am not permitted to have a clue how it works or what will happen if you bone your unit. :)

Emplode can't correctly interract with the unit but the unit itself is happy, although the last playlist I was uploading to is busted. Switching to that playlist appears to do a quick reboot and it returns to the previous list.

I have the same problem; I was only adding 2 new songs to an existing playlist. Wasn't deleting anything.
I was using 8c commercial. I then found the upgrade for 8c+ but it didn't help.
Everytime the unit reboots it rebuilds the database; then runs ok. The 2 songs I added aren't in any playlists.
I can't resync anymore; keep getting errors.
Oh yeah, I was using USB.

We've mailed another interim upgrade (for the player, not the windows software) to a couple of people who have reported problems like this to us. Mike's putting this 8c+ upgrade up in the next hour or so for public consumption as it fixed the problems for those who were sent it.
Just to re-iterate: don't suffer in silence! If you have a problem, mail bugs@empeg.com - we're here to help. There may well be newer versions that aren't yet on general release which we can send you which are being tested with a limited number of users before general release.

I upgraded the unit to the 8c software and it tried "harder"; but the emplode software still says "sync process failed during stage 3 with error 0xffffffffe" (some # of f's anyway)
Anything else to try??

....while syncing and keeping an eye on the termianl connected to the serial port, I noticed that emplode times out and gives the error back before the empeg is done w/ it's checking...could this be related? My solution was to drop to a shell, manually run the fsck, then run emplode..seems to fix it. -mark

...here's another odity - while waiting for the sync to actually start uploading, my Eudora window (eudora light 3.06) would refuse to come up.. As soon as the empeg started uploading it came up as well. Everything else on the system was working perfectly..
This is under Windows 2000 RC2, btw... -mark
