Look at it this way. If it was some scientific experiment about how a cross-shaped object would penetrate reinforced concrete with regular glass-filled openings, I think we'd all be surprised if it turned out that the protruding elements didn't even damage the glass where they hit. I'm not saying that it wouldn't be possible, but I think that the people conducting the experiment would want to find out why.
In this case, it seems some people have tried to find out why, but no one really involved in the investigation itself.
