As much as I try and stay away from compaq the only low range server that has me hooked is the proliant 1600. Now I am on a quest to find one to setup as a personal server, basically just to experiment on. I thought I would ask here, as this community seems to have connections in just about every department. Anyways, if anyone has one at work, home, knows a friend that has one, a suplus reseller, etc. that wants to sell one please let me know. It would really be appreaciated.

Im just looking for a basic 1600 with at least a pII 300 mhz processor..obviously the faster the better. And have around $150-200 to spend.

I looked around ebay and found a few, but nothing did strike me as a "great" deal... even though I guess $150-200 isn't much money, so I really shouldn't get my hopes up. But hey, im a starving college kid.

Thanks again,
Greg

We get almost all of our servers from Nautilusnet. You can get a bare chassis for about $100. Of course, that really doesn't do you any good because you'd still have to buy a CPU (or two), RAM and drives. You can get two PIII 500MHz processors for ~ another $100, 512MB of Registered ECC for another $100, and then drives. Hmmm... $200 would be a real good deal.

Your best bet is getting a almost fully loaded used one off eBay because you end up spending less money in the long run.
I'd say jump on this, it even has 5 drives and array controller.

Well I ended getting this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3048127428 along with another pII 450 processor and vrm. And also the rack to tower kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11212&item=3049494311.

Just in case anyone was interested. =)

Now im on a quest to find SmartStart 6.40 or equivelent. If anyone has a spare copy or can make an iso of it, it would be greatly appreaciated. I've been looking for an iso all day with no luck. I did, however, find a site telling how to do it without the cd, but the cd would be a lot nicer.

No actually you don't want any 6.x CD. What you seek is a 5.5 CD, the last one to support the PL1600 and any other server without the F9 ROM Setup. Also, with an array controller, a SmartStart CD is mandatory to configure the array.

I also have a old ProLiant 4000/6000 rack. Is 5.5 what I need, too?

Yep. Any non ML/DL/CL server will not work properly with 6.0 or above. And certain ML/DL/CL ones also don't support the 6.0 CDs. Basicially, if the server uses F9 to get to a BIOS setup type program, it can use the 6.0 CD. If it uses the F10 partition, it needs 5.5.

Great! Thanks! Any idea where I can get 5.5? (the Proliant of course came from Yet Another Dot-com Liquidation Sale, with no software or manuals).

The SmartStart CD ordering line is 1-800-573-1099, and they have 5.5 and 6.4 right now. Should be about $20 including 2 day shipping at most if I remember right.

I got mine on ebay for $13 after shipping. The guy has another one for sale as well. He shiped it out the same day.
Just do a seach for SmartStart and you'll see a few 5.5 versions.

Sorry, I'm used to only taking to clients in North America. SmartStart in Europe:
+353 1708 8605

Though I am not sure if that is an order line, or just support.

You can get them from HP. I am looking at a SmartStart 5.50 disk that I ordered from HP tech support for our Compaq Proliant 1600R..I'll see if I can remember what the address is, because I remember it being very difficult to find.

I know, I used to work for HP Proliant Support

I did just remember the URL to the site for SmartStart though, and found the phone numbers for several countries. Look here.
