Looking at the datasheets for the SMC, it SHOULD work. The products should be compatible with each other as both are 802.11b compliant. Unforntunately, there probably isn't going to be a surefire way to know, short of actually trying it. Some Wireless products work with others, some don't. SMC and Lucent have worked together in the past here, but that is in the reverse situation (smc card, Lucent AP).
As far as accessing it, you would have to configure the EMPEG not to power down completely (I think based on previous posts, that you can still access the unit over the ethernet with it in standby mode), and make sure that your wireless-->ethernet converter is getting 5v always (or switched if you are paranoid about draining your battery).
