No, I'm not looking to replace my Galaxy Nexus. I'm trying to find a phone for my mother in law, who recently broke hers. Here's the basic requirements:

- QWERTY keyboard for texting
- not a smartphone
- non-contract
- works on AT&T
- definitely under $200, preferably under $100 it possible

That's pretty much it. She wants something she can text with, and doesn't want a data plan. She also wants a physical keyboard. My difficulty is that I really don't know where you buy unlocked phones like this, or how to research what's available. It seems pretty difficult. I'd really appreciate any help you guys could offer. Thanks!

Oh, and this is basically what she had before, and I guess the kind of thing she'd like again. I might just end up trying to get that, but perhaps there's something better out there?

If you type AT&T slider in to ebay, you get a bunch of choices. I don't know anything about these kinds of phones, so that's all I can offer.

Another option is to go to Best Buy, Walmart, or Target and just pickup a prepaid (GoPhone) device off the shelf. AT&T prepaid phones can take your mom's SIM whether it's prepaid or postpaid.

Older Nokias don't show up as smartphones on AT&T.

My wife has a prepaid Verizon (I know not AT&T) as you described with unlimited calls, web, and texting for $50 a month. She did have Verizon plan phone but that was way more expensive. She likes the phone and seems to be able to navigate it without asking me a lot of questions (I like that), she is not real technical. Prior to this phone she had a Motorola Razor (two I think) and some other Motorola phones and they kept breaking. That’s ashamed. I worked for Motorola years ago and they put out quality products.

If you’re interested I could get the model number.

Ooo, I wasn't aware of that. That makes the search a little easier. Thanks!

It's not AT&T, but I'm interested in the model anyway. I don't think switching carriers is an option, though. Her kids (my wife and her brother) are both on AT&T so it's free to talk between them, and that's where most of her calling is done.

I don't know if you got something by now, but the unlocked LG Xenon GR500 is today's Best Buy deal of the day. For $69.99, it doesn't look like the worst choice you could make. At least you could return it if it sucks.
