As for the missing BIOS....OEMs make a habit of hiding such complex things from their users.
If installing linux is a likely then check with some of the linux user groups to discover what are the more linux friendly laptops in terms of drivers etc.
As for the serial port, another option might be a PCMCIA serial card - assuming one exists.
