It can lead to any number of things, like people running out to vote when they hear their candidate is losing to people thinking "why bother" if their candidate is winning. And of course exit polls mean diddly [censored] when it comes right down to it, so why not wait and post the results an hour later, when it's officially in the record books. I mean, there's no problem reporting numbers as different counties or precincts report in, at least at that point voting is over.
