Agreed, you should check to see if some USB system file has become corrupted.

However, my bet is on this:

USB buses on computers actually have a limit to the number of devices which can be addressed by a given USB bus chip in the computer. I remember one of the specs actually reduced that number, don't remember whether it was USB2 or USB3. I'll bet that there are too many devices hanging off the USB2/USB3 chipset and the Kindle was the last one in the pecking order.
