I think what frustrates me so much about remote control codes and the whole universal space is that it really seems to me like everything doesn't HAVE to be so complicated. There are better ways to do these things, and we certainly have the technology, but no improvements have been made. All we have instead are fancy ways to deal with the needlessly complicated mess.
